Multifunctional learning environment

Innovative concepts make it possible to accommodate different learning situations within a single classroom.

An example from Brussels:

Future Classroom Lab (FCL) – Learning Zones

Our products are based on the unique pentagonal design of our table. This has enabled us to develop a product line that makes it possible to create all six FCL learning zones within a single learning space.

Cooperative and self-organized learning:

the effective combination for contemporary, modern teaching.

The advantages of cooperative learning:

In cooperative learning settings, students work together in groups to complete projects and assignments. In this approach, teachers act more as facilitators, providing support when needed. This method promotes student development in a variety of ways:

  1. Development of social skills: Students learn to share their ideas and opinions, listen to others, show respect, and work collaboratively to find solutions.
  2. Increased motivation: When students feel that their contributions are valued and that they play an important role, they are more likely to engage and participate actively in the group.
  3. More effective learning: Working in groups allows students to explain and discuss what they have learned with each other. This helps deepen their understanding and reinforce their knowledge.
  4. Development of individual strengths: In a cooperative learning environment, students can use their individual strengths and skills to support others in the group. At the same time, collaboration allows them to recognize their weaknesses and work on improving them.

The advantages of self-organized learning:

In self-organized learning, student responsibility is the central focus. Learners plan and manage their own learning process, set goals, and independently search for learning materials and strategies. Teachers support students in goal setting and self-reflection, but step into the background to give them the freedom to follow their individual learning paths. The key benefits of self-organized learning include:

  1. Individual adaptation: Students learn to consider their own needs and interests and to set their own learning pace. They can define their own learning goals and methods, which helps them identify more strongly with the process and increases motivation.
  2. Development of independence and personal responsibility: Students become more confident and independent by taking greater responsibility for their own learning. They learn to manage their learning time and goals and to motivate themselves — skills that can benefit them beyond the classroom.
  3. Improved use of technology: Learners can access a wider range of learning materials and tailor their learning more effectively to their individual needs.

Optimal: combining cooperative and self-organized learning.

Both self-organized and cooperative learning methods offer numerous advantages. However, neither approach alone is sufficient to fully meet the diverse individual needs and learning styles of all students. A combination of both methods is therefore essential.

A key benefit of combining the two approaches is that students can work together on projects and assignments while also pursuing their individual learning paths and goals. This hybrid form promotes both collaboration and communication as well as independence and personal responsibility. By combining these approaches, teachers can create a wide range of learning environments that reflect the students’ needs and abilities.

Requirements for the learning space

In order to successfully implement cooperative and self-organized learning, the learning environment must meet certain requirements in terms of furniture and layout.

  1. Flexibility: The space should be designed flexibly to support both group work and individual learning. Tables and chairs should be easy to rearrange to accommodate a variety of working configurations.
  2. Group workstations: There should be enough tables and chairs for different group setups where students can work together and exchange ideas.
  3. Individual workstations: Students should always have the opportunity to work quietly and with focus.
  4. Storage space: Sufficient storage for materials and students' personal belongings is important to maintain order in the classroom. This allows students to organize their learning materials independently.
  5. Variety of seating options: Different seating furniture such as chairs, stools, floor cushions, or stackable benches allows students to create their preferred learning environment.
  6. Technology integration: The classroom should be equipped with the necessary technology to enable the use of digital learning resources and tools.
